Solid, purposeful, and marked with the quiet authority of a century of use — this Wedgwood composition mortar and pestle is the kind of functional antique that belongs equally in a working kitchen or on a collector's shelf.

OBJECT DETAILS An ideal piece for collectors of English kitchenalia and apothecary antiques, or for interior designers sourcing genuine period objects with provenance and maker's marks.

A small Wedgwood composition mortar with turned wooden pestle, both stamped — the mortar impressed Wedgwood to the base, the pestle similarly marked. Wedgwood's composition stone mortars were produced for apothecary, laboratory and kitchen use from the mid-19th century onwards, prized for their dense, hard-wearing grinding surface. The ivory-cream mortar has a lipped pouring spout and clean, utilitarian form. The pestle has a turned wooden handle with characteristic knop finial. English, early 20th century, circa 1900–1920.

DIMENSIONS Mortar: D 12cm × H 6.5cm (D 4.7" × H 2.6")

CONDITION REPORT In very good antique condition, consistent with age and use. The mortar is structurally intact with no chips or cracks — natural staining to the interior surface consistent with use. The wooden pestle handle shows age-related splits to the wood at the knop end, consistent with the natural drying of the timber over time — no structural failure. Both pieces stamped and matched. Photographs form part of this description. Please review all images carefully as they document the piece's condition in full detail.

CURATOR'S NOTE Selected for its matched stamps, its honest patina of use, and the enduring appeal of Wedgwood composition kitchenalia. A piece as useful today as it was a century ago — and considerably more characterful.
