A perfectly weighted sphere of pale stoneware, its surface alive with freely drawn sgraffito lines — this is studio pottery at its most quietly confident, a piece that holds its own in any considered interior.

OBJECT DETAILS: An ideal piece for interior designers sourcing sculptural studio ceramics, or collectors of mid-century and post-war European studio pottery.

A hand-thrown stoneware globe vase — known in collector's terminology as a "weed pot" — with a near-perfect spherical form and a small, precisely placed aperture at the crown. The entire surface is decorated in sgraffito technique: flowing, wave-like lines incised through a pale sandy slip to reveal the darker clay body beneath, creating a rhythmic, almost geological surface pattern. The piece carries an impressed maker's mark to the base within a green felt-backed medallion — the maker has not been identified with certainty, but the quality of throwing and decoration is consistent with accomplished European studio pottery of the mid to late 20th century.

Origin: European. Mid to late 20th century.

DIMENSIONS: H approximately 16cm × Diameter approximately 16cm (H 6.3" × D 6.3")

CONDITION: In very good vintage condition. No cracks, no chips, no repairs. Minor surface wear consistent with age and use. Impressed maker's mark present to base.

Photographs form part of this description. Please review all images carefully as they document the piece's condition in full detail.

CURATOR'S NOTE: The weed pot form — a globe with a single narrow aperture — sits at the intersection of sculpture and vessel. This example has the considered weight and surface quality of a piece made by someone who understood both. Equally at home on a plinth, a shelf, or a designer's console table.
