Large Tribal Carved Wood Masks · Figural Relief Pair · 74cm

A striking pair of large carved wooden masks, each worked with deeply modelled faces and narrative figural scenes above. Their dark surface, substantial scale and individual carving give the pair a strong sculptural presence.

For collectors, interior designers and prop buyers, the pair works particularly well as floor-standing sculptural decoration, bringing height, texture and a collected quality to an interior. The two masks are related but individually carved. Each combines a large open-eyed face with an elaborate upper relief depicting figures and vessels or instruments, surrounded by extensive incised surface decoration. The wood has a deep brown finish with variations, rubbing and patina across the carved surfaces.

Maker and precise origin are unknown, and we have intentionally left the pair unattributed rather than assigning them to a particular region or cultural tradition without supporting documentation.

CONDITION

One mask has a clearly visible vertical split through the lower carved face section. We have chosen not to disguise this: it has become part of the aged, irregular character of the piece and is shown clearly in the photographs.

Please note that the masks are substantial and heavy and do not currently have hanging fittings attached. They are shown in our styled image standing and leaning securely rather than suspended from a wall.

CURATOR'S NOTE

What gives this pair its impact is scale. At almost three quarters of a metre tall, the masks read less as small decorative objects and more as two pieces of sculpture.

We particularly like them placed low, where the carved relief can be seen closely and their weight becomes part of the composition. The visible split to one mask adds another layer of irregularity to an already highly tactile surface rather than making the pair feel overly polished or newly decorative.

Styled here within an Afrohemian-inspired interior, they sit particularly well among dark timber, handmade ceramics, woven textiles and natural materials — although their scale would work equally well against a much more restrained contemporary backdrop.
