Every line on this tray was cut by hand. The peacock at the centre — feathers spread across a field of floral grid — took hours of work that no machine has ever replicated. Kashmir or Moradabad, late Victorian era, made for the colonial export trade.

OBJECT DETAILS:
An ideal piece for Orientalist or colonial-era interior styling, film and TV prop use in period British Raj or Victorian settings, or a collector of Indo-Persian decorative brassware. Oval brass tray, all-over hand-engraved decoration — central peacock with spread tail feathers, geometric floral grid ground, bordered by concentric engraved bands. Two pierced trefoil handles with lac colouring. Solid brass throughout, unlacquered. No maker's mark — typical of Indian export brassware of this period.

DIMENSIONS:
L 60cm × W 33cm (23.6" × 13")

CONDITION:
Good antique condition consistent with age and use. Minor bend to rim — marks of use consistent with a working object. Natural patina throughout, lac colouring to handles intact. No cracks, no repairs. Structurally sound. Photographs form part of this description — please review all images carefully.

CURATOR'S NOTE:
Selected for the density and quality of the hand-engraving — a surface that rewards close looking. The peacock motif in this scale and execution is characteristic of the finest Kashmir export brassware produced for the British colonial market.
