Disraeli Commemorative Teapot Stand — Deykin & Sons Birmingham, circa 1881–1885

Queen Victoria sent primroses to his grave. Birmingham answered differently — pressing his portrait into earthenware, framing it in metal, placing it on every table that grieved. This is one of very few surviving examples with the Disraeli portrait. The Clifton Bridge version is in the V&A. This one is rarer.

Circular earthenware plaque, black transfer-printed portrait of Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield, inscribed "Beaconsfield" beneath the portrait. Reverse carries the full Deykin & Sons maker's mark: "The Eclipse Tea Pot Stand. Manufactured by Deykin & Sons, Electro Platers Birmingham. Estb. 1781. Guarantee of Excellence Trade Mark Registered Patentees." White metal frame with beaded edge, three original brass feet.

CONDITION:
Good antique condition consistent with age and use. Period crazing to earthenware glaze throughout — surface characteristic, not structural. White metal frame with minor age deformation, retains form. Brass feet original and intact. No chips to portrait, no losses to transfer print. Frame and ceramic plaque intact as a complete unit — many surviving examples are found as ceramic only, the metal frame lost.

CURATOR'S NOTE:
One of very few recorded examples with the Disraeli portrait rather than the more common landscape motif. A comparable example with Clifton Bridge decoration is held in the Victoria & Albert Museum collection. Disraeli died in April 1881 — Queen Victoria, breaking royal protocol, sent primroses to his funeral with a note: "His favourite flowers." This object was made in that grief.
