A century of candlelight has left its mark on this richly cast chamberstick — its deep verdigris patina and sculpted foliate relief speak to a quality of craftsmanship that the modern world has largely forgotten.
DESCRIPTION:
An ideal piece for collectors of antique metalwork, interior designers seeking authentic period accessories, or film and TV prop buyers sourcing late Victorian or Edwardian domestic objects.
A hand-cast brass and bronze chamberstick of exceptional decorative quality, in the Art Nouveau and Rococo Revival tradition. The broad, scalloped drip tray is richly decorated with acanthus leaves, scrolling foliage, and shell motifs in high relief; the central socket rises on a reeded column with a petal-form bobeche. The elegant loop handle echoes the organic, flowing lines characteristic of the period. The socket and bobeche display a distinctly darker, more reddish tone than the golden tray — consistent with the common Victorian practice of combining brass and bronze components in a single casting. The uneven, textured base confirms hand casting, consistent with European workshop production of the late 19th to early 20th century. No maker's mark visible.
H 4.5cm × L 17cm (H 1.8" × L 6.7")
CONDITION: In good antique condition, consistent with age and use of over a century. Rich natural verdigris patina throughout — deep green oxidation in the relief details and dark bronze toning across the surface. This patina is entirely natural, authentic, and considered highly desirable in antique metalwork. No cracks, no repairs, no structural damage. Structurally sound.

CURATOR'S NOTE: Selected for the exceptional quality of its casting and the depth of its natural patina — this is not a decorative reproduction but a genuine antique that has lived in the world. A striking object equally at home on a writing desk, a mantelpiece, or a period film set.
