Found at a Saturday flea market, this bell-shaped Bohemian vase carries nearly a century of history in a single, confident glaze — the true hero of our autumn 2026 story.
OBJECT DETAILS:
An ideal piece for interior designers building a warm, heritage-led autumn scheme, or for film and TV prop buyers sourcing genuine 1920s–30s Central European ceramics. This substantial Art Deco vase features a trumpet-form collar, relief spiral handles, and matching oval medallions to both front and back of the body, finished in a richly mottled, cratered "orange peel" glaze characteristic of reduction-fired Bohemian pottery of the interwar period, with contrasting deep chocolate-brown relief detailing to the handles and medallions. Impressed mold number 10423 to the base sits within the same numerical sequence as confirmed Ditmar Urbach examples (10225, 10377, 10913), supporting attribution to this Czech workshop, renowned for exporting decorative ceramics across interwar Europe. Among collectors, this family of forms is informally known as the "Alien Ware" series, a trade term consistently used across the secondary market, though its precise origin as an official factory name remains unconfirmed.
DIMENSIONS:
H 26cm × W 15cm at widest point (H 10.2" × W 5.9")
CONDITION:
In good vintage condition, consistent with age. Small nick to the glaze edge at one of the relief medallions, not affecting structural integrity — the decoration is matching front and back. No cracks. Photographs form part of this description — please review all images carefully as they document the piece's condition in full detail.
CURATOR'S NOTE:
The subject of our Autumn 2026 journal feature, "How Heritage Furnishes the Present" — this vase travelled through six rooms and six seasonal colour palettes to prove a simple point: heritage doesn't stand still behind glass. It furnishes the present, wherever the present happens to be.
